Four manufacturing sites hit zero waste to landfill status as Berry bpi group continues its circular agenda

Berry bpi group continues to show leadership in waste management and now has four sites that have achieved Zero-Waste to Landfill status.

The business, which is the UK’s largest producer of refuse sacks and the largest polythene recycler in Europe, had already been accredited at three of its UK manufacturing sites.

As part of its ongoing commitment to looking after the environment, it has now extended that. The site of PLASgran Ltd, the UK’s leading recycler of rigid plastics which Berry bpi group bought last year, now sends nothing to landfill.

The company has also signed up to Operation Clean Sweep, an international initiative from the plastics industry to reduce the plastic pellet waste that ends up in our rivers, oceans and on our beaches.

“The environmental benefits of recycling plastic are becoming more widely recognised, in turn, maximising reusable material and diverting waste from landfills and the ocean. For these reasons we’re proud to produce finished product from post-consumer plastic with zero waste from the process.” says Daryl Winder from Berry bpi group.

Four sites have been awarded Zero Waste to Landfill certification from Valpak. This means the sites are:

  • Sending zero waste to landfill – including production, hazardous and packaging waste;
  • Sending a limited amount of waste to be used for energy from waste (EfW) purposes; and
  • Committed to continuously improve, by reducing the amount of waste created and sent for incineration.

Of the waste sent offsite, the amount being recycled has increased from 20% in 2016 when the business first achieved Zero Waste status, to 52% today.

The sites have gained ISO 14001 accreditation for environmental management, which helps to control the amount of waste being generating. The Company also works hard to train staff, raise the profile of waste management on site and increase the segregation of waste.

“It is now more important than ever that we walk the talk when it comes to waste,” adds Winder. “I am proud of what we have achieved, getting buy-in from staff at our sites and in developing the right culture with people that are committed to eliminating waste wherever possible, which is why we’re also engaging with schools to educate children on the importance of segregating plastic for recycling, through our ‘Recycle with Riley’ campaign.”

Berry bpi group receives tens of thousands of tonnes of scrap polythene per year and recycles it into finished goods.

It manufactures its flagship and award-winning environmental brand, Green Sack™ range from 100% recycled UK farm polythene, chosen because of its strength, which results in a superior quality refuse sack.

The Company’s range also includes a wider refuse and healthcare portfolio, including domestic waste, compactor and compostable sacks, caddy liners and clinical waste sacks.

Berry bpi group’s entire refuse sack range has all the relevant technical CHSA certifications and UN approval.
